Damages

In the City of Greenbrier, individuals are held legally and financially liable for damages caused to the municipal water or wastewater systems. Key regulations regarding these systems include:
  • Excavation Requirements: Before any excavation begins, you must contact Tennessee One-Call to locate underground facilities. You can submit a request online through the Tennessee 811 website or by dialing 811.
  • Negligence: Failing to provide prior notice for facility locations before digging is legally classified as negligence.
  • Gross Negligence: Intentional or willful damage to water or wastewater infrastructure is classified as gross negligence. In these cases, the city will require payment for repairs and may seek additional punitive damages.
  • Water Meter Damage: If a city-owned water meter is damaged through customer abuse or negligence, the customer is responsible for the full cost of repair or replacement.
